Channels are topic-based rooms. You join with a nickname. Messages appear instantly to everyone in the room unless you use private messages, which should still be treated carefully. There is no algorithmic feed and no follower count.
Nicknames, guests, and optional registration
A guest session starts when you pick a nick and connect. If you close the browser without registering the nick on the chat server, that guest identity usually ends. That is intentional: fewer forgotten passwords on a marketing site.
